Spinal surgery restores life to Colorado woman previously immobilized by severe scoliosis

Share post:

Gina Hargett-Freed, a resident of Littleton, is experiencing a renewed sense of life after undergoing a successful spinal surgery to treat her scoliosis. She had been suffering from this condition for years, and it had worsened with age, compounded by her struggle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Her condition accelerated during menopause, leading to a 60-degree curve in her spine that caused her to lean to the side and forward. The intense pain she experienced rendered her dependent on a cane for mobility and left her feeling hopeless at times.

Despite undergoing two surgeries, her condition did not improve until she met Dr. Shay Bess, a spine surgeon at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver. Observing her high pain levels and debilitated state, Dr. Bess decided to remove the implants from her previous surgeries and perform a new multi-level fusion.

This procedure involved osteotomies, a technique that releases the bone to allow for correction and stabilization of the spine in a straighter position. The surgery was successful, bringing joy back into Hargett-Freed’s life.

Now, she is back on her bike, planning trips with her husband, and looking forward to the future. Her experience serves as a beacon of hope for other patients, encouraging them to explore their medical options, regardless of their age. Her story is a testament to the advancements in medical science and the impact they can have on improving the quality of life for patients.

Gina Hargett-Freed’s successful spinal surgery exemplifies the transformative power of medical advancements. Her journey from debilitating pain to renewed vitality offers hope to others facing similar challenges. It underscores the importance of exploring all medical options, regardless of age, and highlights the profound impact such procedures can have on patients’ quality of life.
